Puppy Feeding Guide for Hong Kong Pet Parents

How much to feed, which life-stage formulas to choose, and when to transition to adult food in a Hong Kong home.

Use a growth (puppy) formula until the skeleton is ready

Puppies need more calories, protein, and minerals than adult dogs — but not an unlimited buffet. A complete puppy or “all life stages” growth recipe is the right starting point. Adult maintenance food is usually too lean for growing bones; large-breed puppy food is designed so calcium and calories do not outrun the skeleton.

Stay on puppy food until your vet is happy with growth and body condition. As a rough life-stage map — not a medical rule — many small breeds shift toward adult food around 10–12 months, medium breeds around 12 months, and large or giant breeds often closer to 12–18 months. Your vet and the brand’s life-stage statement win over any calendar.

How much: start with the bag, then watch the dog

We do not publish gram charts here. Every brand’s calorie density is different, and manufacturer feeding tables live on the bag and, when the brand provides them, on our product pages. Use that table for your puppy’s current weight as a starting point, then adjust weekly.

You want a waist when viewed from above, ribs you can feel under a thin fat cover, and steady energy. A round puppy is not “cute extra” — extra weight is hard on growing joints, especially in a Hong Kong flat where walks may be short and the lift counts as exercise.

  • Young puppies: several small meals (often 3–4 a day) so blood sugar and stomach stay steady
  • Older puppies: usually twice a day once they sleep through and keep weight on
  • Treats and training chews count. Keep extras small so the bowl still does the growing

Feeding in a Hong Kong home

Heat reduces appetite for some puppies at midday. Offer the main meals in cooler hours, and keep water fresh. A spoon of complete wet food as a topper can help a fussy eater — count it in the day’s calories.

We deliver across Hong Kong in 2 to 4 days via SF Express, with free shipping on orders of HK$300+ to most areas. Buy a bag size your puppy will finish while it still smells fresh, or use Subscribe & Save (5% off, pause anytime) so you are not storing a giant sack in a damp kitchen. Details sit on our shipping page.

When and how to change food

Switch recipes over about 7–10 days: start with mostly the old food, then shift the ratio. Sudden swaps are a common cause of diarrhoea. If stools loosen, slow down. If you see blood, repeated vomiting, bloating, or a puppy who will not eat, stop and call your vet.

The same slow shift applies when you leave puppy food for adult food. There is no prize for switching early.

Choosing a puppy food in our shop

Filter dog food by puppy need, then read the life-stage line and the first ingredients. Our label guide explains meals vs fresh meat. If your puppy has a sensitive stomach or a known protein allergy, say so in the Paw-sonality Quiz rather than guessing from bag art.

Veterinary diets are for diagnosed conditions, not for “just in case.” If your clinic prescribed a growth or hydrolysed recipe, start in veterinary diets and confirm the exact product with your vet.

Quick answers

How many times a day should I feed a puppy?
Young puppies usually do better on three or four measured meals. Many older puppies move to twice daily. Follow the bag as a start and keep a consistent routine rather than leaving kibble down all day, especially in humid weather.
When do I switch from puppy food to adult food?
When growth and body condition are ready, not on a fixed birthday. Small breeds often transition around 10–12 months; larger breeds may stay on puppy or large-breed growth food longer. Ask your vet before you switch.
Can I feed my puppy grain-free food?
Only if the formula is complete and balanced for growth and your vet is comfortable with it. Grain-free is not a requirement for healthy puppies. Life stage and calories matter more than the grain-free banner.
